What is SoPE?
The Society of Physician Entrepreneurs (SoPE) is a global biomedical and healthcare innovation network----Founded by three physicians in early 2011, SoPE is a non-profit member organization with a separate supporting tax exempt Foundation. Membership is open to both medical professionals and other stakeholders in healthcare. As of the beginning of 2012, SoPE had over 2,000 members and if the current growth rate continues, membership should top 5,000 by the end of 2012.
What is SoPE’s Purpose?
SoPE is making a better world thru improved healthcare----The vision, mission, and activities of the Society are ultimately about the benefit to the general public of healthcare improvements; better treatment, greater and faster access, and lower costs.
The Society’s global healthcare and biomedical innovation network has potential benefits beyond better patient care—The Society’s efforts help launch new businesses; characterized by job creation and increased global competitiveness.
Why is SoPE Different?
SoPE is unique in its make-up, leadership and mission---The Society is the only known organization founded and led by physicians with the specific purpose of providing support to those physicians and other medical professionals on the front lines of delivering healthcare that need help in bringing their ideas, inventions and innovations for improving healthcare to life.
What is the Real Problem that SoPE is trying to solve?
SoPE’s core contingency has few, if any, other sources of dedicated support ----Private practice and community based medical professionals are the most significant source of the healthcare related commercialized innovations and yet this group generally has little relevant business education and demanding jobs leaving little time to get a business up and running, much less investigating the prospects for a new idea. The Society is the only “go to place” for gaining knowledge from experienced medical professional entrepreneurs as well as learning about sources of education and support services available to help physicians and other medical professionals pursuing an entrepreneurial path.
What is the SoPE Solution?
SoPE is there to provide the network to encourage, educate, and connect entrepreneurs so that new ideas get a chance---The Society operates in the very early stages of innovation commercialization; encouraging physicians and other medical professional entrepreneurs with ideas about how to improve healthcare to explore the possibilities and empowering them should they decide to take those initial steps in the “go to market” process.
SoPE is at the forefront of trying to realize and increase the speed to market of healthcare innovation—Universities and businesses are instituting new programs to identify and spawn internally generated innovation. In addition, local and federal government is looking for ways to support these entities in their efforts to do so. The reach of SoPE’s education programs, community of interest support and networking venues cut across all these organizations when it comes to the physician and other medical professional entrepreneurs. Most importantly, it includes the community based private practice healthcare delivery organizations as well, and works with all stakeholders to support ways to speed commercialization of enhancements in patient care.
What is SoPE’s attraction to members?
The feedback from members participating in SoPE activities and events has been a consistent call for “give us more”---There is just no place like SoPE for physician and other medical professional entrepreneurs and would-be-entrepreneurs. The web site and local chapter meetings provide a special place for physicians and other medical professional entrepreneurs to identify themselves and engage other stakeholders that can help them. It is not uncommon for SoPE leadership to counsel and mentor members on a one-on-one basis to help them get to the next step in their entrepreneurial pursuit. Physicians have driven hundreds of miles to attend local chapter events to hear experts on business topics of interest to them and meet other like minded medical professionals.
What has SoPE accomplished?
SoPE is just beginning to deliver on its promise as an organization and execute its game plan for programs---The newly launched SoPE web site represents a complete makeover and provides the latest social networking tools to allow members to collaborate and associate to exchange knowledge and experiences and get help and support. Local chapters exist in five cities and another fifteen will exist world-wide by the end of the year. SoPE began publishing its monthly e-newsletter in December of 2011 and the first edition of quarterly print/digital SoPE Magazine will appear around May of 2012. SoPE entered into an affinity agreement with World Medical Device Organization (WMDO) to offer their industry leading online courses at a special discount for SoPE members. So much more is in the works, such as our first annual Society/Foundation meeting and conference on healthcare innovation, in-house development of live biobootcamps and online webinars series, and a membership campaign which can all be accomplished as we raise the necessary funding.
How can YOU help make a difference?
Individuals and non-profits can give to the tax-exempt SoPE Foundation---The Foundation’s sole purpose is to provide support for the Society’s education programs and activities. The Foundation accepts grants and contributions of any amount and has several contributor recognition programs for various levels of support. The Society of Physician Entrepreneurs Foundation is organized as a section 501(c)(3) charity. Its tax exemption application is currently pending with the IRS, and upon approval by the IRS, donations to the Foundation will be retroactively tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. (See Exhibit A)
Stakeholder Corporations can participate in SoPE’s Sponsorship Programs---There are so many benefits from supporting SoPE in its mission to improve healthcare for all. SoPE has crafted several sponsorship programs for both SoPE and the local chapters which enable corporate sponsors to not only provide financial support, but to get involved and share their expertise in SoPE’s programs, activities, and community of interest. The interaction between SoPE members and stakeholder support corporations is needed and mutually beneficial. (See Exhibit B)
