Brisbane Society of Physician Entrepreneurs (SoPE) is the Queensland, Australia chapter of the non-profit global biomedical and healthcare innovation network SoPE. Membership is open to medical professionals and other stakeholders in healthcare, including doctors, nurses, dentists, healthcare entrepreneurs, investors, engineers, data scientists, IT professionals, and industry representatives.
Australia is primed for coordinated, regional campaigns to introduce and drive adoption of modern healthcare technologies across the healthcare, digital health, medical device, pharmaceutical and biotech landscapes.
SoPE Brisbane aims to serve as a platform and catalyst that will transform the footprint of medical entrepreneurship across the state of Queensland. By maintaining communication between regional, state and territory SoPE chapters, SoPE Brisbane aims to expand internal domestic communication, access to startup capital, networking opportunities and the sharing of domain expertise across the innovation sector. Further collaborations between public and private organisations embedded within the Queensland medical innovation sector will ensure valuable networking connections for all new members.
SoPE Brisbane intends to meet quarterly, with periodic communication updates in between each meeting to ensure a strong connection among other Australian chapters. Partnership with strategic organisations that can help promote medical entrepreneurship within and outside of Queensland will serve to increase the profile of Australian medical innovation.
Mark Luhovy, MD is a medical doctor and biomedical engineer who has dedicated 20 years to the pursuit of understanding the intersection of medicine and technology.
Dr. Luhovy completed medical school on two continents, undertaking preclinical training in Brisbane, Australia and providing care to underserved populations in New Orleans and rural Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He became the first medical student to rotate through Innovation Ochsner, a healthcare system-based think tank and innovation lab. He contributed to growth at the Ochsner Medical 3D Lab, whose efforts are aimed at promoting virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and additive manufacturing (3D printing) practices within the health system. During medical school, Dr. Luhovy conducted oncology research focused on pancreatic cancer at the Brisbane-based QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. He also founded and established BioEnginuity, a strategic digital healthcare and biotech consulting company, which he still owns and operates.
Dr. Luhovy most recently served as a consultant to Johnson & Johnson, where he led a digital transformation effort and directed a project staff of 30+ personnel. In addition, he currently serves as the Chief Operating Officer of PhenoMx, a digital health startup commercialising an MRI-based digital physical examination for health and wellness.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Luhovy held positions of increasing responsibility across a 10-year career in the medical device industry, with stops at St. Jude Medical, Johnson & Johnson DePuy Synthes and Draeger Medical. While employed full-time as an industry engineer, he completed post-baccalaureate premedical studies at Harvard University Extension School and became a certified PMP Project Management Professional, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and Six Sigma Green Belt. He started his career conducting cardiovascular research at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Luhovy holds a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MD from the University of Queensland. He is an active member of multiple professional societies including Society of Physician Entrepreneurs (SoPE), Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), Ukrainian Medical Association of North America (UMANA), Louisiana State Medical Society (LSMS), and Project Management Institute (PMI). In his free time, Mark enjoys travel, playing guitar, staying fit and spending time with his wife and daughter, friends and family.
