A key part of startup success is being able to tell your startup story. Yet, particularly in high-technology areas like bioscience and medicine, many bioentrepreneurs will end up reinforcing what most of us remember as the purpose of stories—to put us to sleep. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/10-ways-to-tell-a-bad-startup-story#sthash.iXmgCqOc.dpuf

The Coming Medical School Bust
Lower-tier law schools are in trouble. The latest saga is at Valparaiso, which faced a conundrum of whether to lower admissions standards to keep enrollment up, or maintain standards and suffer from falling revenue. Soon, we may be reading about the same thing for medical schools.– See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/the-coming-medical-school-bust#sthash.dWZMw4B3.dpuf
Innovators–Not Managers–Should Vet Ideas
One of the biggest mistakes managers make while trying to encourage innovation is thinking they can choose the best ideas. They create structures, policies, and procedures designed to accumulate, vet, and funnel ideas in the hope that those that reach the bottom can then be easily sorted and funded. Typically, a group of decision-makers assembles, and, after reviewing the proposals, similar to a Roman gladiator event, they give them the thumbs up or the thumbs down. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/innovators–not-managers–should-vet-ideas#sthash.vvfPSDEK.dpuf
Medical Turf Wars
Many years ago, when otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat surgeons) were fighting to be recognized as experts in facial plastic surgery, I was involved in suing the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners to defend my right to be listing as a “facial plastic surgeon” in the Yellow Pages. (For those of you who don’t remember, the Yellow Pages is that big, thick, yellow book that most people just recycle or use as a door stop these days.)– See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/medical-turf-wars#sthash.zz1320ac.dpuf
Rethinking Medical Student Entrepreneurship
Most medical schools don’t teach their students the business of medicine or science. The result is students, residents, and practitioners who struggle to practice profitably or don’t have entrepreneurial knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are necessary to survive and thrive in an increasingly value-based environment. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/rethinking-medical-student-entrepreneurship#sthash.ux6dwmIH.dpuf
What Does the Changing Sick-Care Ecosystem Mean for Doctors?
Rules create ecosystems that drive business models. Those business models are the way entrepreneurs create, develop, deploy, and harvest value through the deployment of innovation. The Affordable Care Act has changed the sick-care ecosystem in many ways, both intended and unintended, and that means that doctors and non-MD providers will have to rethink how and where they do their work. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/what-does-the-changing-sick-care-ecosystem-mean-for-doctors#sthash.UjPDoWFI.dpuf
How to Validate or Kill Your Idea in 4 Weeks
The Business Model Canvas template has become a useful working tool for startup entrepreneurs. It might not always apply and has its faults when applied to some bioscience and clinical ideas, like biopharma and medtech. However, it is a useful tool in digital health or clinical process improvement. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/how-to-validate-or-kill-your-idea-in-4-weeks#sthash.wbPUhiFi.dpuf
Bifurcated Sick-Care Digital Disruption
Everyone wants to disrupt sick care. We are all, quite literally, sick of dysfunctional systems; poor patient-customer service; stupid, erroneous bills filled with inflated, mysterious prices and miscodes; and medical errors due to poor handoffs and miscommunications. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/bifurcated-sick-care-digital-disruption#sthash.EqaXELeW.dpuf
Medical Students Should Take a Gap Year
Taking a year off from school, a so-called “gap year,” is common in many parts of the world but not in the US. The recent announcement that President Obama’s daughter will be taking a gap year before attending Harvard has highlighted the idea, and, as you would expect, some support it and others think it is a bad idea. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/medical-students-should-take-a-gap-year#sthash.ZxN3iqZZ.dpuf
Is Data Analytics the Answer to Physician Burnout?
Physician burnout is rampant. Most successful interventions involve a combination of long-term personal and organizational strategies to prevent recidivism, high dropout rates, or suicide. – See more at: http://www.hcplive.com/physicians-money-digest/contributor/arlen-meyers-md-mba/2016/06/is-data-analytics-the-answer-to-physician-burnout#sthash.60DDn2J4.dpuf
