Some people think that certain specialties, like emergency medicine, orthopedics, or ophthalmology, are more entrepreneurial than others. Of course, it depends on how you define entrepreneurship: number of patents, value of spin-out companies created, valuations, or funding raised? My definition of entrepreneurship is the pursuit of opportunity with uncontrolled resources with the goal of creating user-defined value through the deployment of innovation. For those people who deliver, manage, and lead Sick Care, change is happening quickly. Rapid change leads to change fatigue. The cumulative effect of continual and overlapping change has left staff increasingly stressed, burned out, and overwhelmed. This will negatively impact not only staff engagement and retention but also organizational success. Even with effective change management, change initiatives will ultimately fail if staff remain in this state of fatigue. Large corporations know they have to innovate to grow and compete in the global economy. Corporate innovation outposts and other arrangements have emerged as a result and big organizations are rethinking how they get more creativity from their employees as well as impact from their research and development budgets.
