Physician Entrepreneurship and the Path to Success with Dr. Jeffrey Hausfeld

This description was taken from DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast. To listen to the full podcast please visit this link. “For physicians that are feeling frustrated, I would say to them, ‘Sit back. Take a breath. See really what you want and if the path of going to start a new company is what you want, then give it your full attention. And if you see you can’t give it your full attention, hook up with someone that will help you.’ Because physicians feel, ‘It’s my idea, I want to own 100% of this company.’ And my answer to them is, ‘100% of nothing is still nothing.’” -Dr. Jeffrey Hausfeld… もっと読む »

In fact, several companies have developed infrastructure and processes to encourage workers and management teams to expand their interests and skills. Sabbaticals, knowledge exchange programs, volunteer community projects, side gigs and extended learning opportunities are some examples. Medicine, however, has taken a back seat when it comes to embracing and supporting graduates and trainees interested in portfolio careers. A few medical schools are taking a second look at offering their students the tools they need to succeed in non-clinical activities. What’s driving the… もっと読む »

What entrepreneurship education really teaches us

It’s been 100 years since Harvard Business School began using the case study method. Beyond teaching specific subject matter, the case study method excels in instilling meta-skills in students. This article explains the importance of seven such skills: preparation, discernment, bias recognition, judgement, collaboration, curiosity, and self-confidence. Now, project based learning has emerged as another experiential learning model. Some educators define meta-skills as a group of long-lasting abilities that allow someone to learn new things more quickly.  I have been teaching biomedical and clinical innovation and entrepreneurship for several years now and my students have told me they learned much more than how to start a company or launch an organizational… もっと読む »

Will proximity bias hurt your medical career?

According to a recently reported study, some 58% of knowledge workers are now in hybrid working arrangements, according to a new survey of more than 10,000 workers around the world by Slack’s Future Forum. And while flexible work has become popular, there is a concern of possible inequity between remote and in-office employees. Proximity bias — the idea that employees with close proximity to their leaders are seen as better workers — will penalize women, people of color and working parents the most, as these groups are spending less time in the office than their peers. Yet, as knowledge workers have shifted to hybrid, we’re not seeing an equivalent drop in demand… もっと読む »
